Country Week is always a major event in the school year and 2017 was no different. This year we took three sporting teams to Perth to compete in the week long competition. Kalbarri District High School Country Week Team Captains Ben and Macey started our campaign strongly representing our school in the Opening Ceremony.
The girls Netball team played well throughout the week with several strong performances over the opposition. Coach Keding had the girls well drilled and they found their niche in Division B. This division was very competitive with all games having close scores. On Wednesday Coach Keding and the netball girls discovered some inspiration in their kit bag in the form of a new team mascot – the Frying Pan! The girls played hard all week having only one substitution player which resulted in plenty of court time and lots of tired legs. The Netball team made the 3rd vs 4th playoff of B division and lost to Jurien Bay by 1 point. MVP was Tanika who ran all week in centre and most improved was Jazmin.
The Mixed Volleyball team, captained by Jordan, started the week strongly winning their first two games against Toodyay and Gin Gin convincingly. However, a shock 2 sets to 1 loss to Norseman on Tuesday was a good wake up call. When Thursday came around our team was more prepared for the Norseman game plan which saw a victory 3 sets to 0. The team qualified first in the group stages and had the big match up as favourites against Norseman in the Grand Final on Friday morning. Unfortunately the nerves and pressure got to them and Norseman continually found gaps on our side of the court. Coach Bradley’s players never gave up and fought back after losing the first set to win the second. Norseman were eventual winners in a close third set winning 2 sets to 1. MVP for the week was Macey Berry and best team player was Jordan Hilton.
The Soccer team was an enthusiastic group of players who grew exponentially as the days went on. Coach Kehoe and Captain James were well prepared for the week ahead. Starting the week with a great game against Waroona with a 3 – 0 win. Tom, James and Max all finding the back of the net. Our next match up was against the might of Geraldton Grammar who won 5 – 0. We did meet them again later in the week and held them to 1 – 0 which illustrates how much the team improved. The Soccer team made it into the 3rd vs 4th final but lost a tight match to Exmouth 1 – 0. MVP was Alby and most consistent was Jasmyn.
A huge thank you to the coaches Mr Bradley, Miss Keding and Mr Kehoe for their time and effort they have put into preparing for Country Week. Finally I thank all the students involved for their positive attitudes, determination and hard work training and playing not just during Country Week but also in the lead up.
